Matthew Stratford

I'm a DevOps Engineer by day, broadcast & theatre tech hobbyist by night. From SysAdmin to soldering, writing code to wrapping up a multi-track audio edit, I like to keep busy!

Based in Cambridgeshire, UK.

Professional

Day to day, I'm a Development Operations Engineer at Darktrace.

I work to develop, integrate and package software to bring Cyber Security solutions to customer environments.

Some highlights...

Writing Code

Focusing on writing scripts and services to provide functionality, configuration utilities and monitoring. I also tackle issues in other languages where required!

Python, Bash and NodeJS

System Admin

Using tools for repeatable deployment of software and hardware configuration, investigating performance, networking and operating system quirks.

Ansible, Containers and Linux

Cloud IaC

Making templates across the big cloud providers for deploying products under Infrastructure as Code with scaling, security, documentation and testing.

Terraform, CloudFormation, Azure RM

Broadcast

Broadcast Engineer

Hobbyist

I've always loved technology, especially of the audio/video kind! You can blame my grandad for that one!

I shared my big love of music through DJing in my teens. These interests combined at the student radio and television stations at the University of York.

Podcast/talk show

In this show, we talk about nerdy news topics, new technologies, things we get up to out and about and anything else that tickles our fancy. Live from a different location every episode, different technical and logistical constraints make it always fun to tech.

Electromagnetic Field

EMFCamp AV Team

Building a 3-stage festival in the middle of a field is a tricky one! I've helped get stages setup, deployed and improved live scheduling / captions signage and helped support EMF Films.

Computing

I replaced / redeployed / reconfigured pretty much everything with a CPU during my time at URY at least once. From storage servers to software audio routing and processing, I learned a lot about how to manage software and hardware in production environments.

Linux, FreeBSD and Windows

Engineering

I got stuck into many projects during my time. Building hardware for studio lighting, routing and playout control, installing audio and visualisation hardware and Outside Broadcast facilities, including building new automation systems during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dante, ADAT, AES3, Analogue, SDI, Satellite

Playout

In my final year and beyond, being a pandemic-stuck graduate, I took the challenge to replace the ancient windows-based playout system used at URY. The result was a multi-OS and multi-user system with new features like audio normalisation, waveforms and improved studio integration.

Computing

Building and tuning video playout systems for the studio and new outside broadcast kits, improving networking, edit bays and in-studio cabling, I got pretty stuck in.

FFMPEG, CasparCG, BlackMagic Design

Web Services

I performed a big project to modernise the YSTV website, including design, playback and snuck in a few management features too. During my time we had our first UHD website release too.

Bootstrap, PHP, Transcoding

MCR

In Roses 2018 (one of the largest inter-university sport tournaments in Europe), I held a Master Control Room position, controlling and monitoring what went out when, including on 24/7 and venue streams.

Theatre

Theatre Engineer

Hobbyist

Since primary school, I've loved being backstage in the performing arts world!

Taking up roles in audio, projection and special effect bits, you can find me hovering around theatres all over Cambridgeshire and sometimes beyond!

Some highlights...

Mixing

Learning to mix line-by-line on a variety of shows, with a variety of mixers from Yamaha and Behringer. Dare I say I'm getting fairly good at it!

Mixing bands, monitoring mics and EQing Ice Rinks are also on the cards.

TheaterMix, Wavetool, Shure Wireless Workbench

Playback and Effects

When I'm not mixing microphones, I'm probably mixing a soundscape for a play. Working with several theatre companies to source media and implement QLAB cues automations for surround sound effects and video walls and projection contents!

QLab, Reaper, Davinci Resolve, PixelMator Pro

Lighting

As if I don't have enough hobbies, I sometimes like to fit myself into tight spaces and follow the cast around the stage with light!

I'm also partial to making my own lighting effects for on-stage and background effects.

Broadcasting from Home

Student Radio Association | 2020

After working with the URY Computing Team to make a new Remote Broadcasting suite for the Covid19 pandemic over the course of a 3 week revision period in March 2020, I was part of a talk to explain how we switched to entirely broadcasting from home.
